Mary Ann PARKES (PARKS) (1818-1907)

Lived on Cloonree farmlands with brothers, Richard and Charles, and sister,

Jane.

Baptized in Church of Ireland with sponsors, Samuel Parkes (Park) and Mary

Daly. Converted to Roman Catholicism in later years.

NOTE: Record of Interments of St. Joseph's RC Cemetery, Castlerea, County

Roscommon shows date of death, 27 July 1907, for "Miss Parkes of Cloonree, age 92." This is undoubtedly Mary Ann and indicates she was born about 1815. However, the inscribed names on the Parkes tombstone in St. Joseph's Cemetery gives Mary Ann's date of death as 16 July 1910 which means she was born about 1818. Clearly, either the records registrar was mistaken in recording the interment date--a good possibility since he didn't even enter the given name but merely "Miss Parkes"--or the mason inscribing the tombstone lettering erred. There is no evidence whatsoever to show that the Miss Parkes recorded in the interment register is another person; Mary Ann Parkes (Parks) on the other hand appears with the family in Cloonree in several documents.

For this record, therefore, the more-likely tombstone date of death (16 July 1910) is used.
