Individual Note

In 1939 began studies in Scotland for entry into clerical life at

Marist Brothers' Juniorate, Hetland House, Ruthwell, Dumfries. Four year course required passage of Lower Forms Oxford examination, Junior Oxford examination, and the Senior Oxford School Certificate, all given by Oxford University in England. Graduated with highest school honors in

July 1942 and assigned to seminary in Athlone, Ireland for further training

and study. Left seminary after six months and returned home to Sligo.

Emigrated to U.S.A. through Cobh, Co. Cork, arriving in New York on the

converted Liberty ship USS Marine Jumper on November 27, 1947. Admitted

under alien registration number A006816648 and immediately relocated to

Washington, D.C.

 

Worked briefly for D.C. Transit Company before entering business management

training program with the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Rose to manager,

chief adminstrative clerk, and district sales manager before resigning in 1960.

 

Drafted into U.S. Army on 9 Jan 1952 at Fort Meade, Maryland and sent to Fort

Ord, California for basic training and Army administrative schooling.

Subsequently sent to Adjutant General School, Personnel Administration

& Management, Fort Ben Harrison, Indiana. Graduated in October 1952 and

assigned as personnel classification and assignment specialist at HQ, Camp

Drake, Tokyo, Japan. Took and graduated college-level Army USAFI course

through University of Maryland during this tour of duty.

Joined The Humane Society of the United States in Washington, D.C. in July

1962 as Assistant Director, National Services Department. Became principal

writer/editor of Society's newsletter and other publications. Subsequently

rose to director and vice president supervising field offices and national

investigations. Retired on June 30, 1990 and settled in Corpus Christi, Texas.
