An entry in the Sligo Library papers (T2966/M/11) reads: "Correspondence and papers of Mrs Joanna Parke, George Thomas Parke's widow, about Parke's son by his previous marriage, Capt George Fortescue Parke, and particularly about his accidental drowning on Windemere in 1861 and the debts he left behind."
The Army birth returns index 1796-1880 shows a George Fortescue Park born in Ceylon 1834-1837 (p 649). The certified true copy of his birth registration, which is in printed type shows his parents as Captain George Thomas Park and Jane Wickes (sic) Park. I have no doubt that "Wickes" is a mistranscription of "Hickes".
1861 census: "late Captain in Her Majesty's Army", aged 23, lodging with Jonah Dickinson, gardener, at Undermillbeck, Bowness.
His death was the subject of a coroner's inquest held on 13 June 1861. The informant was C. Gardner Tomson(?), Coroner for Westmorland. The cause of death was given as "accidentally drowned by the overturning of a yacht". His occupation was given as "private gentleman".
