Charles, Jr. PARKES (1863- )

No record found other than birth certificate from the Co. Roscommon Heritage &

Genealogy Society, Strokestown. Since Charles, Junior, was named after his

father, Charles Parkes (Parks), and his birth is officially recorded and since

the births and baptisms of his siblings, Mary Ann and Thomas, were not, it is

probable that Charles, Jr, was the first-born, the oldest of the three

children.

In 1968 an old priest who had been handling parish records in the Castlerea

area for many years told submitter, Patrick Parkes, that the siblings, Thomas

and Mary Ann Parkes, were probably baptized at one of the many "station" masses

so commonly celebrated in private homes in those days. Further,

this source stated he believed they (Mary Ann and Thomas Parkes)

were baptized by their uncle, Reverend Samuel Parkes, by then a Catholic

priest, who made no official record in the absence of their parents' marriage.

Older family members also maintain that Charles, Jr, joined the British Navy

and was drowned at sea in his teen years.
